Distinction for accomplishment in environmental protection
For the construction of the biomass power plant for the Kölleda engine works (Thuringia), M+W Zander was awarded the DaimlerChrysler Environmental Leadership Award 2003 for its particular commitment to the protection of the environment.
The wood combustion plant in Kölleda, marked the advent of the first “green engine works” in the pastoral heart of Germany. An innovative energy concept was devised specially for the factory.
A central wood combustion plant with a delivery rate of 1x3.0 MW und 1x2.0 MW covers the basic supply, while a redundancy boiler functioning on fuel oil, covers peak period demand. The annual energy requirement came to approximately 6,000 MWh for 2003, and around 8,500 MWh for 2004. such yields call for the employment of around 8,000 to 12,500 cubic meters of wood chippings. An increase to 12 MW is scheduled in subsequent stages.
Wood is a renewable primary product, which only marginally affects the CO2 balance during combustion. Depending on its quality, one cubic meter of wood chippings has, for instance, the same concentration of energy as 70-100 liters of fuel oil or 65-95 cubic meters of natural gas.
So called biogenous solid fuels have gained in relevance during the past years. In comparison to, for example, the heat and power generated by solar energy, the resourcing of energy from biogenous solid fuels, such as wood chippings, tends to be cheaper and for the most part, these resources are also less problematic regarding their integration in an energy system.
